Athanasius Kircher created a device that could magnify the amplitude of sound.
This increased ability to hear sound allowed statues to appear to have the
human ability to hear at a protracted distance. Obviously, another device
could magnify the spoken language of an observer hearing the sound to "close
the loop" making the statue appear very human: an ability to gull a credulous
public.
